Sugarcane price may be fixed at Rs. 2,700 per tonne:: The farmers in Medak district may receive Rs. 2,700 per tonne for sugarcane they have produced in the current season. A final decision would be taken by Collector Smitha Sabharwal shortly in this regard. From the beginning the farmers have been demanding Rs. 3,000 per tonne whereas the three factory managements – Ganapathi Sugars (Sangareddy), Nizam Sugars Limited (Medak) and Trident (Zaheerabad)- are offering a price of Rs. 2,600. Sugarcane is being cultivated in about 21,000 hectares The farmers are ready to accept the officer of Rs. 2,600 provided the managements are ready to bear the transport cost. A meeting was already held with senior officials in the past and another meeting was held on Tuesday presided over by Joint Collector A. Sarath and attended by representatives of factory managements, farmers and Cane Development Corporation. In the previous meeting the Joint Collector had directed the managements to come with an offer price. According to sources, while the farmers are expecting Rs. 2,800 that would be offered by the managements, one of the farmers’ leaders said in the meeting that the managements were ready to offer Rs. 2,700 per tonne which has shocked the other farmers. “Is it a match fixing with managements?” commented one of the farmers who attended the meeting.
