Summation of trip, final report on the Search for the Black Madonna part deux: First the goof-ups: The biggest screw-up on this trip was obliviously when I put regular gasoline in our rental car that uses diesel. Given that we were about four hours from the apartment and we were in the mountains, there was a lot of anxiety around this. The good part is that we were able to get it fixed remarkably fast and for only 200 us dollars. People are great. (2) The next one was when I lost the ticket for our toll on the highway. We were lucky here as well because the young women that helped us spoke English and rather than pay the lost ticket fee we only had to pay what we owed. People are great. (3) Then we tried to get out of a parking garage not realizing we could only pay with a credit card and not our bankcard. The machine ate our ticket and we were stuck at the gate with the gate down. After several minutes of non-communication via the speaker I heard, “I’ll just open the gate.” We were free. People are great. (4) Finally it turns out that I’ve been using Wilbur’s conditioner as shampoo this whole time. I guess with my hair it doesn’t really matter. I am bald. I made a total of 24 paintings. Less than last year but last year we lost our Internet connection. I don’t know if the paintings are good or not, I just make them. I think I drank 20 or 30 bottles of wine. Wilbur wrote/started eight poems. She read six books. She babbled on FB much less than moi. We were able to “discover” four Black Madonna’s. Three of those were returns to re-document and one new. We drove to the village of Tarascone, to find that the church was closed and only open after 5. My next plan was to go back there after Mende but that plan was thwarted by the first screw-up. The good news is I was able to get excellent photos this time. So as the old saying goes, “this subject warrants further research.” Soon I will be making paintings based on these new photos. We learned how to navigate this part of the world even more effectively. We met some wonderful people and have places to return. Thanks for going on this trip with us. I hope all my posts and ramblings were not too intrusive or bothersome. It was kind of a way for me to tell the story of our trip, both to you and more importantly to myself. Oh and if things go as planned…I think I will be launching my new website later today. It will be an international launch! Live from Southern France, BrianFrink! Stay tuned…it’s up to the technology God.
