Summer/Fall volunteer opportunities: Snorkeling spring Chinook - TopicsExpress

Summer/Fall volunteer opportunities: Snorkeling spring Chinook thermal refugia: Sunday, Aug. 4. If you have never snorkeled with 20 big chinook swimming around below you, it’s a real kick, and not to be missed. You’ll also see large trout, whitefish and other fish. Need to have your own snorkel gear. Water temps do not require wetsuits. Nutrient Enrichment: Dates TBD in late August, September and/or October. We get hatchery chinook and coho carcasses from ODFW and toss them in the upper river to provide food and nutrients for macroinvertebrates, fish fry and smolts, and other animals in the watershed. We only get a day or two notice of when carcasses will be available, so please let me know soon if this is something you would like to do. This work is not all that difficult and does not involve any hiking. Just need to be able to throw the weight of salmon. This is also a great way to learn the upper river. Spring Chinook spawning survey: Dates TBD late September-or early October. Involves walking several miles along the mainstem of the upper Molalla and documenting all forms of spawning activity. Also a fun way to learn the mainstem of the upper river. Need to be able to do serious stream hiking. Fall River Cleanup: 9am-1pm Oct. 12 starting at Feyrer Park. Help pick up trash and other recreation enhancement in the upper Molalla River with a bbq lunch at Feyrer. Bring the whole family for this fun, rewarding volunteer event! For more info on these events, please contact volunteer coordinator Russell Bassett at 503-735-5088 or message this FB page.
