Summer Rowing Scholarships for BPS Students Immediately Available Buffalo, N.Y. (July 3, 2014) – The West Side Rowing Club of Buffalo’s (WSRC) mission is “to promote the advancement of the physical, mental, and moral well-being of the youth of the City of Buffalo, New York and surrounding communities through education, training, instruction, and participation in the sport of rowing.” With that vision in mind, WSRC has been collaborating all year long with area organizations to help identify scholarship candidates to attend summer rowing camp for those with the desire, but not necessarily the financial means, to row. WSRC has just been awarded a generous $2500 grant from the Ralph C. Wilson Foundation, which is dedicated to the health and wellbeing of Western New Yorkers in meeting the needs of underserved youths. The is enabling West Side Rowing Club to offer six full scholarships to Buffalo Public School youth for the 2014 summer, Learn-To-Row Crew Camps. West Side is also the proud recipient of a benevolent $2000 donation, presented by Mary Wilson at the Spring 2014 WNY Girls in Sport Event. This generous gift, was a designated portion of the proceeds from the Buffalo Bills 50/50 Raffles, in partnership with United Way, and is enabling four young girls to attend a 3-week Learn-To-Row Crew Camp this summer, where all were honored at a special Scholarship Awards Reception last month. These two generous gifts, coupled with additional private donor funds, will help ensure the sport of rowing is accessible to all, providing up to 30 Buffalo Public School/Erie County Youth with full rowing scholarships at West Side Rowing Club this summer. Summer Crew Camp and Summer Camp Select are available to youth 12-17 years old, or entering 6th grade. The programs provide hands on introduction to the sport of rowing. Campers will learn basic rowing technique and boat moving skills, both on land and on the water, in a fun and low intensity environment. The Camp meets Monday through Friday, from 8:30 am until 12 noon each day, and no experience is needed to join. Each Camp session will end with a special Regatta (race) and cookout for friends and family, and each athlete receives a special t-shirt. Session I is July 7 – July 25, and Session II is July 28 – August 15. A limited number of scholarships are immediately available on a first come, first served basis.
