Summer has its barbecues and fireflies, pool days and starry nights. The warm breezes on beach days are a balm to my soul. The hot sand under my feet, a castle-shaped bucket filling with sand from tiny shovels being held by tiny hands, and a handsome man next to me laughing with a fathers delight as he goes to and fro with enough water to bind the sandy towers. Winter has its hot chocolate and sledding, ice skates and Auld Lang Syne. I love the idea of a hot cup of tea, a cozy fire, a favorite blanket and a book, long enough to make the endless darkness seem short. Or a family movie night- a fire crackling on the hearth and all of us cuddled up on the couch under a couple of blankets. Spring has its dew and dreaminess, fresh buds and fresh air. Everything feels new and vibrant, as if the whole earth might just burst if it has to hold in its potential any longer. Morning breakfasts on the porch with sweaters and coffee, tiny pajamas and tiny slippers. A walk around the yard to see if those peonies are still tightly balled up, working hard to keep a secret- a beautiful, beautiful secret. But Autumn, oh Autumn. Fall has its crisp air and bonfires, pumpkin patches and apple orchards. The slow, methodical process of chopping and dicing, stirring and simmering a beautiful autumn soup to be enjoyed around the table with crusty bread broken by the hands of the people I love so much my heart hurts. The majesty of the trees bursting forth with color, dancing in celebration of a year well-done. Sitting around a Thanksgiving meal with gratitude to the One who gives life, and gave it once more. Autumn is deep and complex, robust with flavors, scents, and texture. Autumn leads us into the dark nights of winter with confidence. There is something holy about the sense of celebration and grief that saturates the Autumn air, Im sure of it. In Heaven, it is always Autumn. -John Donne Happy First Day of Fall. Be blessed in this beautiful season.
