Summer is definitely on its way, weather has been sunny, warm and calm and the excellent conditions have put the community in good spirits. Today winds are from the NNW and slightly overcast but all is well. I am pleased to say Karen Lavarello - Schreier is recovering well after her appendicitis operation and is now safely back in Switzerland with her family. The island community continues to wish Karen a speedy recovery. The week brought four fishing days and landed a total of 20.8 ton of lobster. Fishing is off to a very good start and we pray for good weather. On Tuesday the Japanese TV crew came into the Tourism Centre and cooked some Japanese food at Café da Cunha. On the menu was Japanese curry, sushi , pancakes and sticky rice, all tasted very delicious and 27 islanders turned up to give it a try. Later on in the day a few island men were busy catching calves to take to another part of the island. This can be quite a dangerous job as the mother cow does not want to give up her youngster easily. The island men are not deterred though as its all part of Tristan life. On Wednesday the Conservation rib went off to Nightingale to visit the team of people there doing Rock hopper penguin studies. The MV Baltic Trader and the MV Edinburgh left for Cape Town and a few islanders departed the island for medical investigations. Sunday was very calm and sunny and quite a few people went to the Potato Patches for a braai. The sunshine was lovely and a few people came home with a suntan. It certainly feels like Christmas is on its way.
