Summer program in Istanbul: “The Road to Democracy in the Islamic World” Application deadline: February 20, 2014 Two Syracuse University faculty members, Professor Mehrzad Boroujerdi (Director of the Middle Eastern Studies Program), Professor Matt Bonham (Co-Director of the Syracuse Public Diplomacy Program), and faculty from Bahçesehir University in Istanbul will engage students in a dialogue about the transition from authoritarian to democratic governance. The program, “The Road to Democracy in the Islamic World,” will be offered to both graduate and undergraduate students (for three or six credits) from June 14 to July 9. In addition to course work and discussions outside of class, students will enjoy living in Istanbul, with its long history, rich culture, beautiful Byzantine and Ottoman architecture, and ethnically diverse population. Students will also visit Izmir and Ephesus as part of the program. Grants of $1000 to $2000 are available to all students to cover transportation and some living expenses during the program. The deadline for applications and financial aid is February 20, 2014, so time is running out on this wonderful opportunity.
