Summer time, and the living is easy? Ha! Was a time, summer was - TopicsExpress

Summer time, and the living is easy? Ha! Was a time, summer was considered a kind of off-season, theatre-wise! These days, not so much! And this has been one of the most intense seasons we can remember, over here at Drammy Towers! Birth, death, life! Summer’s heat, summer colds. Summer’s flying, summer flu. Sumer is icumen in; summers away from home.. Meanwhile, we find ourselves scuttling joyfully from show to show, indoors and out, trying to catch everything we always knew was coming, and to fit it the new companies and productions that seem to sprout up like summer blooms along the way. Some of both (old and new) of course are Drammy-eligible, and some are not (and I promise on my honor that we ONLY ask for Drammy comps to those that are eligible…we attend others, of course, because WE LOVE LIVE THEATRE, but strictly as ticket-buying, fee-paying members of the general public). I will come back more fully to “Drammy-eligible” soon…maybe even tomorrow. Basically your show must be locally produced, be in our Portland catchment area (the two exceptions are Lakewood Theatre and Broadway Rose, which were grandfathered in), have a minimum of EIGHT full performances not including previews, and be scripted (ie must follow the same script…with the same cast…every time. It may be born of improv, workshopping, and devising, but it must end up “set.” It is important we all see the same show other committee members do…and with live theatre, that’s a hard call, even with scripted shows). And of course you must WANT us there, which means providing comps. But more of all that anon. For today, a simple plea. If you ARE a new company, with a play that seems to qualify, and you want Drammy coverage (or if someone you know has a new company etc, and you think they might not know about the Drammys but would LIKE coverage), PLEASE try to let us know ahead of time. You can use the email address pdxdrammys@gmail Or use this page to communicate with us. We do our very, very, VERY best to spot everything that crops up, but if we only notice some bright new thing half way through a run, with only a few performances left, it can be hard to get enough people there for us to make our required minimum.. Of course this is true at all times of year. Summer just often seems hardest, with lots of new stuff, and people out of town, and all those other summer activities going on…vacations, weddings, house guests, life. It’s always lovely to hear about new companies, and new shows. So please include us in your notices. Liking this page will also help spread Drammy brand-awareness, as will sharing this info, and our email address, with your friends. Thank you.
