Monthly Meeting Saturday, June 28, 2014 Time: Coffee at 9:30 AM, Meeting at 10:00 AM Location: Sun City Social Center Ballroom 2 Texas Drive, Georgetown TX Speaker: Christopher Hooks, Politics Writer for The Texas Observer Subject: Texas Politics, Dan Patrick, TPPF Christopher Hooks joined The Texas Observer this year. Previously, he was a freelance journalist in Austin, where he grew up. His work has appeared in Politico Magazine, Slate, and Texas Monthly, among others. He graduated from The New School in 2012 with a bachelors degree in history. The Texas Observer writes about issues ignored in the mainstream press. Their goal is to cover stories crucial to the public interest and to provoke dialogue that promotes democratic participation and open government, in pursuit of a vision of Texas where education, justice and material progress are available to all. The Observer is a nonprofit news organization that specializes in investigative, political and social-justice reporting from the strangest state in the Union. The award-winning magazine is published monthly, and the Web site features daily content. Two of Hooks articles are included in the newsletter (which you can find by clicking on the link in the first paragraph of this email above) on pages 9 and 10. He has also written about the Texas Public Policy Foundation, which is the Texas arm of ALEC (American Legislative Educational Council). This is the group that has been providing model bills to Texas (and all the states) legislators. Its working very well for them, as we saw in the Wendy Davis filibuster. Now they have taken aim at local city government, and have announced that their first city to infiltrate will be Dallas. See page 6, column 2 of the newsletter. July 4th Frontier Days Celebration Date: Friday, July 4, 2014 Time: 5:30-8:00 pm Location: Behind the McConico Building Brown Street (between I-35 and Mays Street) Round Rock TX The magic of 60-strong flotilla of Democrats flooding down the streets of Georgetown behind the Williamson County Democrats float can be repeated in Round Rock on July 4, 2014! The parade staging area is the large parking lot behind the McConico Building on Brown Street (between I-35 and Mays Street). Roads will be closed off, but simply take the exit for RM 620 in Round Rock and go over I-35 heading east. The First Baptist Church of Round Rock will be on your left; head to their parking lot on the north side of the church building. Then simply walk 3 blocks south to the McConico Buildings parking lot (it will be obvious). Well have flags, candy to hand out and candidate signs to hold. Four people can ride in the float; if Im alerted to need, I can add two more seats in my van for riders. This is a shorter parade route than the Georgetown one, but with a larger audience! You will need to be in place with the float by 9:30 AM; parade is at 10 AM; parade route will carry you back closer to your car.
