Sun Life Insurance De-listed Chiropractors & Physiotherapists Sun Life Insurance Company of Canada has joined Blue Cross Insurance Company of Canada in denying orthotics coverage if dispensed by chiropractors, physiotherapists and osteopaths. In order to reduce costs, Sun Life Financial has decided to stop reimbursement of orthotics & orthopedic shoes dispensed by chiropractors, osteopaths & physiotherapists. Other Canadian insurers are reviewing this matter and it is the general opinion that most insurers would soon follow Sun Life and Blue Cross to stop payments to chiropractors, osteopaths & physiotherapists for custom made foot orthotics and orthopedic shoes. Most manual osteopath in Canada do not dispense custom made foot orthotics and orthopedic shoes as they have not received the required training in orthotic casting and dispensing. Many insurers in Ontario cover custom made foot orthotics & orthopedic footwear only if dispensed by a certified pedorthist. National Academy of Osteopathy has added a new Diploma in Pedorthics postgraduate program just for licensed health professionals such as osteopaths, chiropractors, physiotherapists, naturopaths, acupuncturists, physicians, athletic therapists and kinesiologists. The 2000 hours pedorthics program is designed for the working health practitioners and offers flexible lecture hours (after hours and weekends). It takes 1 year full time or 2 years part time to complete the program. You will attend classroom at our campus, intern at a pedorthic clinic and attend workshops in an orthotics manufacturing lab. At the end of the program you will be able to built your own orthotics and modify shoes to make them orthopedics. Tuition is $8,500 and our first class starts first week of January 2014. We are accepting students now. Enrollment is limited and competitive.
