Sunday “Peace is not absence of conflict; it is the ability to handle conflict by peaceful means.”-Ronald Reagan Conflict is the product of ignorance. I am referring to a mind or mentality that doesnt understand what is in front of him. People on both sides of any conflict believe they are right, whether its on a TV show or in the real world. Conflict defines as a disagreement through which the parties involved perceive a threat to their needs, interests or concerns. Within this simple definition there are several important understandings that emerge: Conflict tends to be accompanied by significant levels of misunderstanding that exaggerate the perceived disagreement considerably. If we can understand the true areas of disagreement, this will help us solve the right problems and manage the true needs of the parties. People respond to the perceived threat, rather than the true threat, facing them. If we can work to understand the true threat issues and develop strategic solutions that manage an agreement then we are acting constructively to manage the conflict. Lastly, the parties involved. There are often disparities in our sense of who is involved in the conflict. Sometimes, people are surprised to learn they are a party to the conflict, while other times we are shocked to learn we are not included in the disagreement. If this mind is trying to fit the object of observation to his knowledge in the past or memories, then conflict arises. The present moment is definitely independent of the past or the memories. We are in conflict if we cannot see this basic reality. Everything is changing; nothing is fixed in this whole existence. Only the ignorant mindset cannot see that he is anchored in the past and cannot see the reality of the present. Man is a competitive creature, and the seeds of conflict are built deep into our genes. We fought each other on the savannah and only survived against great odds by organizing ourselves into groups which would have had a common purpose, giving morale and fortitude. Mahatma Gandhi once said, “There is no way to peace. Peace is the way. Humanity’s resort to violence and to settle ego’s conflicts makes no sense. For everything we claim to be humane, bids us to be compassionate and sane: To love our neighbors as we love ourselves and stash our grievances on basement shelves once we’ve resolved our conflicts peacefully with justice, honor, truth and equity. Internal conflicts can usually be solved by asking yourself why do I want this and telling yourself the truth no matter how much you dont like the answer. Once you do that, decide to do the right thing, even if your selfish self wants to do something else. Think of the big picture and the welfare of others are just as important as your own. Sometimes you just have to pump the brakes and the things may look different soon, without your help, so learn to be patient. Most problems will solve themselves if you let them. And it gets easier with practice; dont worry if it seems hard at first. Peace is not the absence of conflict but the presence of creative alternatives for responding to conflict or aggressive responses and an alternative to violence. After all, nobodys right all the time, and a broken clock is right twice a day. We live in a time of conflict - external and internal - when we sometimes concentrate too much on what divides us.
