Sunday reflections: All of us struggle to make a difference in the world….such a stunning line Andre Agassi said when he introduced David Foster in a show. True, it is human nature to strive for a shining moment; that occasion when you wanted your feats highlighted without the intention of being showy. For the spectators, they must understand that before the spotlight is lit on someone, he or she has undergone a lot of sacrifices. Let me share a tale when one day my prejudice got the better of me. I belong to a clique of chick lits; I meant my girls who love books and reading. We arrogantly felt superbly intelligent because our common ground was literature. One day a ‘newcomer’ joined us but we noticed that when we talk about written pieces, she couldn’t contribute, kept silent and can’t go with the flow. While our group either have speeches or published articles left and right, ms ‘newcomer’ never seem to have a spotlight on her. And so we avoided her like a plague. [the evil side of me] Behind her we were mean: could she ever have a particular intelligence? We ask. Then we had a big conference. It was an “achievers’ night” awards. Accolades were poured upon us recipients for speaking this and writing that, but the part that got the biggest applause in that major event was the surprise mini-concert. Do you know why you must not judge your neighbor? Kasi baka mapahiya ka. She might be a closet superstar. Guess who got the brightest spotlight that night because of her diva-ish presentation? You’re right: the ‘newcomer’ we were snubbing off. Pahiya kami lahat. And now she’s more popular than all of us combined. We were ‘punished’ for losing a potential superstar friend. Oh well…lessons hit you hard like a drum.
