Sunderland are hoping to seal a deal to sign former West Ham striker Marco Borriello during the January transfer window. The out-of-favour Roma forward spent the second half of last season on loan at Upton Park but endured a torrid spell during which he appeared just twice and failed to score. As talkSPORT told you last week, the 32-year-old returned to Roma during the summer but has not played for the clubs first-team at all since. He is out of contract at the end of the season and available on a free transfer but now, according to reports in Italy, he is set to leave the Italian capital next month and return to the Premier League. Black Cats boss Gus Poyet is monitoring Borriellos situation and knows the experienced hitman could be available on the cheap, although the Wearsiders face competition from Cagliari. The Serie A side are managed by another man who has West Ham connections – former Hammers boss and Poyets ex-Chelsea teammate Gianfranco Zola. The 48-year-old was appointed the manager of Cagliari earlier this month and it has been reported that a move for Borriello is high on his list of priorities.
