Supervisor training topic: Week ending 7/26/13: carrying equipment Carrying equipment; when carrying equipment it is most important to use proper body mechanics/ergonomics. Improper ergonomics can result in musculoskeletal disorders. Signs that MIGHT indicate musculoskeletal disorders are: • Decreased range of motion • Decreased grip strength • Loss of function • Loss of balance • Deformity • Swelling • Cramping • Redness • Loss of color There are six common causes of musculoskeletal disorders. • Lifting • Repetitive motion • Contact stress • Extreme force • Vibration • Awkward posture Making ergonomics work: preventing these injuries takes commitment from everyone. To assist, follow these rules. • Expect new equipment and methods to feel awkward and slow at first • Adjust ergonomic equipment to fit your body before you begin each shift • Maintain and repair your tools and equipment • Replace padding and guards when they are worn • Bring the work to you instead of stretching and bending to reach the work. • Keep your body moving-stretch, change positions, and take breaks • If you’re holding your body in an awkward position, look for a more comfortable way to work. • If a part of your body aches or cramps up, see if a new position or shifting your balance will make it stop. • If you cant stop the discomfort, report the situation so it can be evaluated
