PNG native, Jason Yip set the new All-Tackle record for these freshwater snapper in 2012 with a 20.87 kg (46 lb 0 oz) fish he caught on July 30, 2012 while fishing the Kumimaipa River. Yip was casting a Rapala Shad-Rap lure when the massive fish smashed the plug on the surface, and then raced toward structure to free itself. Although Yip couldn’t turn the fish, even with 37 kg (80 lb) gear, he was able to survive the initial run and maneuver the fish away from the debris and into open water. Roughly fifteen minutes after hooking up, Yip had the massive fish boatside. Realizing the potential for a world record, Yip quickly beached the boat and weighed the fish on his certified Boga Grip. The fish weighed almost 2 kg (4 lb) heavier than the previous record, which had stood for 20 years. The good news for the fish, and other anglers that fish these waters, is that Yip released the snapper alive to grow even bigger!
