Support your favorite small local businesses on November 30. There are several I like near me. However, do not try to start up a small local business yourself because the regulation and certification process is so complex and expensive that very few can ever do it. Exhibit A: kids lemonade stands, Exhibit B: home baked goodies or canned goods. Go ahead, try to start a business. The same folks who want us all to support small local merchants routinely craft punitive and overwhelming regulations that stifle them. My kids asked me why I dont start a pie making business. I told them my kitchen would never pass the government regulations and I cannot afford to get the equipment that would. A friend of mine looked into a home canned goods business the same way. Same story. Another friend who braids hair tried to start a small business. She could not qualify based on the onerous regulations. We cant say we both support small business but then pass laws that stifle it. Which is it, we support it, or we dont?
