My pick of the day is this lovely song I chose as my tribute to the greatest female singer in Indian music industry, Lata Mangeshkar, on her birthday....She hails from a family of musicians....Her career started in the forties and spanned over seven decades during which she is supposed to have sung over twenty five to fifty thousand songs which number is always debated upon....She sang for over one thousand movies in nearly thirty six Indian and foreign languages....Her outstanding career won her numerous awards among which are, the Bharat Ratna, Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhusha, four Filmfare Awards for Best Female Playback Singer, Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award, and many more....She has reigned the music industry and is nick named the Nightingale of India....Happy Birthday Lata ji! The song I chose is from Barsaat, which paved her career....The lyrics are by Ramesh Sastry whose simple play on words gave this number an evergreen feel... Ho thar thar thar thar hawa chale hai jiyara dag mad dole, jiyara dahg mag dole... Phar phar phar phar ude chunariya ghooghat more khole, ghooghat more khole... Barsaat launches SJ as full fledged composers whose work set a record sales in its album....They gave this song a very simple orchestra using the flute extensively to create a sweet melody....They took a bold step and had Lata sing all the ten songs for all the female characters which was never before heard of in the movie industry....The movie was a runaway hit that helped RK purchase the RK studios...SJ gave Lata a much needed boost to her career and she never looked back.
