Sure, I wont lie, NS is horrible, the pay is shit, and serving in the rank and file wasnt my cup of tea too. But given the choice i would still serve. The Army were the first people to recognised I was a decent nurse. They reward me by shipping me to Brunei so that I earn more than $480 allowance. I get to experience the joy of being a foreigner in another country, and it gave me a wealth of experience. Not many nurses can claim they had done medical evacuations by land, sea and air. And yes, I met those brutal officers and NCOs but behind their uniform and ranks, they are just proud Singaporean men doing their duties. Some of them remain good friends to this day. I met my fair share of people from ah bengs and mat reps and smart rich kids and political activist, and I got into fights and frequently got beaten up too. With just my army experience I was able to secure a job as a nurse. And with my millitary record I was able to get a spot in the Singapore Hajj Mission. Sure, I dont earn big bucks, I am still single, I cant drive or own a car, but I thank god my life has been as it is and I had the Army to thank for.
