Surrealistic dream sequences in movies have made way for a more - TopicsExpress

Surrealistic dream sequences in movies have made way for a more realistic approach these days. I (re)realized this while watching Rays Nayak today. From what Ive read (about German Expressionism), the old school dream sequences are strongly influenced by the German Expressionism. It is a pity that such a beautiful art form, which more or less accurately depicts the phenomenon has given way to seemingly normal technique which, when you think about it, makes it seem all the more abnormal. The outlandish set design, loud props, eccentric costumes and equally queer occurrences fit in perfectly with the realistic everyday events in the movie. The dreams gives the audience a new perspective about the Uttam Kumars character, and even fuels the character arc/ progression. It serves a dual purpose of letting the audience in on his fears and insecurities, while the same fears and insecurities successfully changes the character from within. One thing I havent been able to understand is the attention given to married ladies throughout the movie. The only unmarried woman Uttam Kumars character meets is Sharmila Tagores character, and it is with her that he freely mingles with. Even when he meets that Pramila woman, who he isnt sure if she is married, she points out that he is nervous around women, despite him romancing beautiful women on screen. One cant help but wonder if he was nervous because he wasnt sure if she was married or not. Also every married woman in the movie is shown subtly lusting after the superstar, and their husbands are predictably mediocre compared to the celluloid God. Not sure what the portrayal of this particular relationship dynamics meant.
