Suryakiran old age care centre There are 81 million old people in India. According to an estimate, nearly 40% of senior citizens living with their families are reportedly facing abuse of one kind or the other but only 1 in 6 cases actually come to light. If in any old age home we talk to the inmates, everyone’s story would be much the same- turmoil in the family, disgust against the old and finally the removal of the elders from the family. It is the breakup of the system of the joint family and the introduction of a nuclear family that has brought this unhappy situation enter our society and the old age homes have had to come up to cater to the needs of the elderly. Besides this, since the women have started working out of homes, theres no one to look after the routine needs of the elders at home. Also with the women working, come their attitudes towards the elders. This attitude of the women has also largely contributed to the removal of elders from families. That’s the reason, the necessity for old age homes was felt. Our values have become super-materialistic; we have become obsessed with money, power and status so much that we are gradually losing our morality. Commercialization has begun to spread its roots. The need of the hour is to redefine success. But, what is success? Is it all about making money and coming to power, owning a bungalow, going on foreign trips or driving a BMW? Or is it about good human relationships? A successful person is he who is good at heart and has good relationships and human values. His or her social status does not constitute success. We are living in a society where interdependency is vital for the sustenance of the society. Life is an experience and not just a business. Contrastingly, in rural India, the old aged are looked after by the young the moment they are unable to look after themselves. The not-so-young and the not-so-old toil hard from dawn to dusk to run their families. It is a simple tale of giving and taking where everyone does his/her bit. There are no old age homes there! Have you ever thought why? But the problem is that a large section of our society is throwing away the parents on streets like some obsolete object. We agree that this should not happen but what if it happens? Where will these helpless people go? If there are no old age homes they all will be left on street to die out of hunger and diseases. Many people file a court case against their children when they are forcefully thrown out of their home. They need a shelter till the time the court gives its judgment. Many people do not win the case. In such a case old age homes are the only place they can reside. Thus till the time this very bad practice of DISOWNING PARENTS is not eradicated from our society we definitely need old age homes Aging is a time of multiple illnesses and general disability. Besides an increased level of illness, the aging process itself leads to certain disabilities such as low vision and blindness resulting from cataracts, deafness resulting from nerve impairment, loss of mobility from arthritis and a general inability to care for oneself. Even the well cared elders will fall sick often because of age, but if they are neglected by their own relations and left on the streets, where do they go? Who will take care of them? How will they lead the rest of their life? . Vision: To provide due care the live of the helpless and destitute and old Aged persons in the society and even those Aged persons neglected by the family and did not get proper care due to poverty, so that they live as valued members of the society with a peace of mind before going to their eternal home. Goal: To Ensure a sound and friendly environment for the poor helpless and destitute an Old aged persons towards achieving a promising peaceful conditions for them fostering their physical, mental, social and spiritual development and well being as well. In nearby Agra, intense poverty, political violence, famine, drought, , chronic endemic diseases and poor maternal health care, all are contributing in turning a large numbers of an Old Aged person into helpless and destitute each year. There is generalized and pronounced lacking of health, nutrition, and caring services for indigenous poor helpless and destitute Old aged persons interfering their physical, mental, social and spiritual development and well being, ultimately leading to a uncertain and frustrated life. Suryakiran Shiksha, Samajik Nyay Avam Kalyan Samiti identified the following underlying causes of the above situation in Agra Region: There is no residential facility for the poor helpless and destitute an old Aged person at the place where they can live under proper care to them in peaceful mind without any harassment for their life. The family or care givers of the poor helpless and destitute an Old aged person or an Old Aged person himself/herself cannot afford adequate foods for his/her proper nutrition. The poor helpless and destitute an Old Aged person do not get health care services and remain untreated and maltreated for many diseases. In many cases, the poor helpless and destitute old Aged persons are often deprived of proper care, tender love and participation in – social events and spiritual activities etc as being they were neglected. This project has been undertaken to address the above problem and its underlying causes. The project will ensure access of 60 helpless and destitute Old Aged persons in Agra Region to safe accommodation, tender love, proper care, nourishment, guidance, health service and other basic needs through establishment and operation of a sustainable an Old Aged home. Information of the Home: Presently it is catering to the needs of providing shelter, clothing, food, medical attention, spiritual and emotional support to 40 inmates out of which 28 are women and 12 are men. These old persons are mostly picked from the streets to provide shelter and care till their last breath. In general aged persons of approx. 50 years of age and in special cases (mentally retarded) younger persons are admitted in this home. Some of the inmates walk normally and some are bedridden who require some assistance to move and carry out their daily routine etc. The home accommodates the elders based on their physical ability and the gender. It has separate hall for women and men. The inmates who are able to walk and do their regular day to day activities live in a separate room and use the common amenities like toilets, dining hall, kitchen etc. for their regular activities. However, the inmates who are not in a state to walk and need some assistance to do their routine activities on their cot itself stay in special room generally called sick room (shown in the image). The beds in the sick room are made of stainless steel and each bed is provided with a tap and provision for passage of waste water into the drain. The sick room also is floored with tiles to ensure hygiene is maintained in the sick room. It needs lot of personal care, patience and medical attention towards these inmates for a number of days to restore some of them to ambulatory state. Some of these inmates are mentally retarded and are placed under special care. This forms the basis for the requirement of well equipped room to treat the sick and bed ridden and to nourish them back to the normal state. The inmates are moved from the sick room with the help of wheel chairs to the dining hall and other surroundings with the help of home attendants. Needless to quote that more than the physical needs, it is very essential to provide emotional support to the elders. Hence every care is taken by the home with patience hearing to them. The home also invites volunteers to interact with them and share their experiences
