Susannah LeFevre was born in York Co., Pa. on March 1,1778 and baptized in the Trinity Reformed Church. She married to Henry Holsopple, a scout for the military who was carried off to the Ohio Territory and burned at the stake in 1813. The story is told as follows:Susanna (LeFevre) Holtzapfel, a young woman of 36 yrs, took her 8 childrn, from Greenbriar ,W.Va. in 1815, back to her home in York, PA, where her father who was remarried deeded a tract of land 500 acres in Somerset Co., PA to Susanna. Jacob LeFevre was a well-to-do merchant in the town of York, & he had traded an overcoat for the land to one Mr. Campbell, a fur-trader who was heading North for the winter. This tract of land is located in Paint Twp., & it was here that the Widow Holsopple (as the name was now being spelled) lived in a small cabin & reared her young family. Yrs later, her son Charles Holsopple, named the town of Holsopple in his mothers honor. Susannah Holsopple was indeed a brave woman to come over the Allegheny Mts.to make a home for them in Paint Twp.. However I have found the deed of Jacob LeFevre for the land showing a different story as follows: Rev. John Campbell and his wife Catherine had sold land to Jacob LeFevre of York Co., Pa. on 13 June 1789 land called White Thorn Bottom on the north side of the Stonycreek in the County of Bedford containing 253 acres. It had been Patented on Oct. 17, 1785 and enrolled in the Offices in Philadelphia in Bk.4 pg. 52 , for the sum of 148 pds.13 shillings 6 pence, paid by Jacob LeFevre and Recorded on July 27, 1790. The land became Somerset Co. in 1795 and it is recorded in Vol. 18,pgs 31-32 in Somerset Co., on Nov. 29, 1841 the 253 acres called White Thorn Bottom it was given by Jacob Lefever and Catheine his wife to their daughter Susannah and widow of Henry Holstzaple, deceased containing 253 acres for their natural love and her legacy of her fathers estate. Susannah LeFevre Holsopple lived in Paint Twp., Post Office, Scalp Level in 1850 in the home of her daughter Catherine Holsopple Custer, born in 1798 in York Co. married to Jacob Custer. Jacob Custer died in 1840 and Catherine and her mother Susannah were living in the home, ( now on the Seanor Rd.) where Susannah LeFevre Holsopple died in 1856 and is buried in the Foustwell Cemetery. Catheine Holsopple Custer and Jacob Custer are buried in the old Melchoir Seese Cemetery that is situated on a hill behind the homestead above Spruce Run Rd. and near the Seanor Rd. not far from Scalp Level. When researching the families of this area one finds very courageous people in our past.
