Suspend district mayor’s bodyguards immediately 15 May 2014 Release: immediate The DA would like to express its sincerest condolences to the family and friends of 27-year-old Andile Phungula who was killed on Monday after uMgungundlovu’s District mayor Yusuf Bhamjee’s bodyguards ploughed into the back of his stationary vehicle on the N3. Bhamjee’s bodyguards are becoming habitual offenders on this stretch of road and must be suspended immediately pending the outcome of an investigation into this unfortunate incident. Just last year they faced attempted murder charges after firing at a motorist who failed to make way for them on the fast line in a timely manner; with one even failing to disclose his previous conviction for attempted murder to the court at the time. It is high time that these bodyguards, along with other VIP security staff, realise that the N3 is a public road and they are not above the law. I also fail to understand why Bhamjee would allow such overly aggressive individuals who have no respect for other road users to keep their jobs. The fact remains that a young man lost his life and those responsible must be held accountable and brought to book. These bodyguards need to realise that there are consequences for their actions and Bhamjee must ensure their immediate suspension if he does not condone this latest incident. The investigation into what transpired on the day must also be conducted as speedily as possible and made public to dispel the notion that VIP bodyguards who bully and kill other road users get away with mere slaps on the wrists.
