Sustainable fishing 05-12-2014 Sustainable labels for artisanal fishermen The Fishermen and Boat Owners Association (FBOA) will soon introduce a series of labels that will clearly identify fishes caught by boats affiliated with the association. The FBOA believes that this move will be a step forward as it will help preserve fish stocks while ensuring that customers receive the highest quality produce which has been harvested using methods that are ecologically and sustainably sound. This project will also serve in highlighting the importance and value of artisanal fishing which will be the main theme of an exhibition that will be held this Saturday at Alliance Française (AF) from 3 pm. In a move that has been described as bold and avant-garde, the FBOA has confirmed that it plans to introduce a new labeling system that will come attached to fish caught by hook and line fishermen who are affiliated to the association. In a telephone conversation with TODAY, Virginie Lagarde, who is the chairperson of the FBOA, enthused that Seychelles is pioneering the ecological and sustainable practice of labeling its produce in very much the same manner as it has been done in developed countries. “We are seeing more countries adopting this practice which will have plenty of benefits for both the fishermen and their customers. Discerning buyers have become sensitised about the importance of protecting natural resources which also serves to protect the livelihood of our fishermen,” said Mrs Lagarde. The trained biologist noted that such a move will also ensure traceability which will put further pressure on illegal practices such as poaching. “This is a positive step for the future and it is becoming increasingly popular around the globe as governments realise that this is the only practical way forward,” she averred, adding that, “in buying fish that is labeled, customers will not only be helping artisanal fishermen but also supporting a sustainable and responsible practice.” The FBOA will partner with the AF this Saturday in highlighting the importance of having artisanal fishermen and the need to protect them and their activity. The chairperson also said that she expects to see children taking part in the exhibition; they will be making contributions to the display in terms of drawings. “We hope to organise an event to commemorate World Fisheries Day as of next year. The event falls on November 21 and we encourage members of the public to come to see us this Saturday at the AF and lend their support to our fishermen,” she said.
