Sweet nurse story-- I took care of an elderly lady back in august after a complicated surgery. She had been preparing herself for the worst -- getting her will in order & seeing everyone she needed to-- we talked a lot and made a great connection. We talked and cried together about my first child starting school and how its hard letting go. She knew she was going to die then I think. I would visit her on the regular floor and she looked weak. I knew then. Well, she was discharged and thats all I knew. Her two daughters showed up at my work Monday to give me & Aubrey a Christmas present. They said that their mother fell in love with me and she told them, while in hospice, to remember me & Aubrey at Christmas. Im not bragging on myself, but bragging on the fact these ladies didnt have to do this. They honored and paid tribute to their mother. It was a very special moment and Ill never forget it. If youre a nurse and dont think you can change a life in one or two shifts - youre wrong. Love your patients.
