Swiss club lose 10-0, back manager, sack players FC Grenchen took the unusual step of firing players after another humiliating defeat Early Doors By Eurosport Nov 20, 2014 09:45 .Swiss club FC Grenchen have sacked 11 of their players Swiss club FC Grenchen chose to back their manager after a 10-0 defeat, but sacked their players instead… It’s always the same in football; whenever a team start to struggle, fingers always point directly at the manager. The man in charge is, usually quite rightly, the first to come under criticism. If he can’t find a winning formula then he is effectively failing at his job and, should he not find a way to stop the rot, is usually given his marching orders. So, after 14 league games in which they have accrued just five points, conceding 80 goals while scoring just ten, you’d think that FC Grenchen boss Patrick Boesch would be on his way out of the door. But, no. That’s not the case at all. Instead, the Swiss outfit have taken the incredibly unusual, and very bold, step of firing players. 11, to be precise. Grenchen’s sporting director Renato Brun said: “It sounds brutal, but these players are not good enough for this league.” Brun declared that the dismissals were made purely for “sporting reasons”, but he did eventually concede that there were “one or two character reasons also.” Coach Boesch admitted that he is unfazed by the state of affairs, saying: “It works well and is not an issue. Others would have long since chucked in the towel in his situation.” This could be a stroke of genius from the Swiss side, who have simply not allowed their manager to be made a scapegoat. Alternatively, it could all go very, very wrong, leaving them without any players and, eventually, a manager.
