Swiss schools.... Zeb had his first homework returned as his colouring was not neat enough. He can colour perfectly and loves colouring, but was bored with the work (colouring endless number of identical objects in one colour to show which group had more or less) and did it fast. Aaron meanwhile has a week to learn the names and spelling of all 26 Swiss Cantons, and their capitals and to be able to place them on a map together with the main lakes and rivers (his classmates had longer last year, but he has entered half way through a 2 year programme) ..... I actually think both exercises have value (do your work neatly however boring and train your mind to learn encyclopaedic knowledge), but still, rather depressing. Thank God that my kids will only have this for a few years of their schooling. Hope they will learn Swiss rigour and neatness (aaron has to draw a neat frame on every single page of his math exercise book, exactly 2 squares from the edge - when asked why he was told that you always do that in your Maths book!) and facts and then they can learn to think and be creative the rest of their lives. :)
