Syrias permanent representative to the UN, Dr. Bashar al-Jaafari, - TopicsExpress

Syrias permanent representative to the UN, Dr. Bashar al-Jaafari, has decried mistreatment of Syria in the UN. This comes after a recent incident when the UN webcast of a press conference, organized by the Syrian Mission on June 18, was cut off five minutes into al-Jaafaris opening comments. As a result thousands of those watching UN webcasts could not hear the ambassadors speech. It is shocking that it should happen at the UN, and yet it has become regular conduct, because so many of the UN institutions and agencies are overwhelmingly dominated by the West, especially by the US, comments Sara Flounders, co-director of the International Action Center, an activist group that supports anti-imperialist movements around the world, and opposes US military intervention. In an exclusive interview with Radio VR she described the conference as extremely newsworthy adding that it was a report on a delegation that had gone to Syria for the election reporting on their impressions, which were overwhelmingly favorable, talking about a huge outpouring and the historic importance of this election in terms of the standing of Syria. She spoke highly of the authorities for organizing elections in such difficult circumstances. Can you imagine the accomplishment of securing 9600 and some polling stations within Syria? That alone was a huge accomplishment. The activist also underscored that the turnout was high despite the fact that Syrians could not participate in the poll in a number of countries, including the US and France. Keep in mind that the universal practice is that people, including expatriates, immigrants and refugees, can take part in their own countrys elections. The activist stressed that such an assessment of the situation in Syria is the exact opposite of the news, the statements that especially the US, but also France and Britain, the NATO countries are pushing through the UN. The message of the Western world is that Syria has no credibility and the elections were of no consequence at all. Sara Flounders believes that it was the main reason why the live feed was cut off: to demonstrate that such a representation of events in Syria is a nonevent. Bashar al-Jaafari also stated that the June 18 incident was not an isolated one. The previous occurred on June 7. Moreover, that happened numerous times throughout 2013. It is an outrageous offense and it happens all too regularly, stated the expert in an exclusive interview with Radio VR. Sara Flounders recounted other cases relating to Syria. For instance, once the live feed was cut when Russia and China were explaining why they decided to veto the US resolution aimed at getting UN backing for a war in Syria. One cannon but agree that these incidents prove that there is a complete bias against Syria. That bias manifests itself in other ways as well. For instance, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon has met with Ahmad Jarba, a leader of violent insurgent groups in Syria, but has refused to meet with Bashar Jaafari. The activist concludes that this is completely at odds with the very purpose of the UN and it is a remarkably partisan approach. Syrian ambassador stressed that his homeland pays over $1 million to the UN each year and apparently has a right to be heard through the UN mechanisms. Sara Flounders gives other examples. One has to do with the UN forces in Syria. The opposition forces located near the Syria-Israeli border receive healthcare from Israel. So, you have the Zionist forces supporting the opposition and violating the line of demarcation in Golan with the UN forces assistance. She also brings up Ukraine saying that the coverage of the events there is wholly distorted, even at the UN. voiceofrussia/2014_06_23/Biased-UN-treatment-of-Syria-a-regular-and-outrageous-offence-expert-3364/
