S’African election ready Saturday The final results of South Africa’s parliamentary and provincial elections will be announced on Saturday as over 95 per cent of the votes have already been counted, authorities reported on Friday. The Deputy Chairperson of the Independent Electoral Commission, Terry Tselane, told newsmen in Cape Town that “I am confident that we will be done by lunch time.” Tselane said the IEC had made arrangements to declare the results on Saturday. The IEC results showed that the ruling African National Congress would continue to govern the country and eight provinces, with the Democratic Alliance holding on to the Western Cape. The ANC has between 62 per cent and 63 per cent of the overall vote, but it has lost about three per cent points in the race for votes for the National Assembly, compared with the 2009 elections. The DA has about 22 per cent of the votes, strengthening its position as the official opposition nationally. The Economic Freedom Fighters has been by far the most successful newcomer, with close to six per cent of the vote, and is set to be the official opposition in North West and Limpopo. South Africans voted on Wednesday to elect the new National Assembly and provincial legislatures.
