TAKE THREE TUESDAY II - Wilsons Coffee & Tea, 3306 Washington Avenue, Racine. wilsonscoffee This is the best place to go for serious coffee drinkers, no cutesy drinks, no sandwiches, just finely-pedigreed coffee, described by the country of origin, roasted in-house. I arrived at Wilsons around lunchtime midweek. The interior fairly good-sized with at least twenty tables, 75% full. Per the recommendation of one of our members, I ordered the Chai, 12 oz, for $3.30. I drink coffee every day but I dont speak coffee. I dont think I even know enough to be dangerous so I was glad to have this recommendation. This was such a creamy drink, not overly chai-tasting, just perfect. I would order this again and again. Because Wilsons roasts there own coffee, there was a lot of coffee on shelves for purchase as well as coffee accoutrements. Some gift items but mostly coffee stuff. I saw lots of fliers for local community happenings. It was a welcoming place. There were a few pastries, but dont expect to come here for lunch. This is serious coffee time. I saw a few groups of people, but many tables were filled by solo people reading or looking at any number of electronic devices using the free wireless. The negative with this place, as well as all of the downtown places, is parking. Soapbox here: These West Racine businesses are hard to keep afloat. When you look at the vacancies and the nature of storefront businesses these days anyway, it cant be denied. We live in cashless society. I would suspect that it is not uncommon for people these days not to have fifty cents on them to stuff the meter. So instead, people drive on by Wilsons and go to Starbucks or McDonalds. I guess Racine could be like Milwaukee and go to the expense of installing the new meters that take credit cards at the centralized boxes, but these are so much more trouble and not always the easiest things to operate, especially for the generation that didnt grow up with computers. How about we just make parking free? Or at least two-hour parking? Is there a downside to this? How much money can they actually make from these meters daily anyway?
