TAPESTRY: Lost souls….those left behind. Haven’t we all, in our minds, written the fairy tale book where we are the lead character, complete with the happily ever after ending? It’s the one where we live forever loving that special someone. In our tale, we exchange vows, making promises to each other. We raise children, celebrate birthdays, toast anniversaries. Our story is one of warmth and contentment. Never planned or written, suddenly and without pause or concern, cancer inserts itself in Chapter 9. It has taken away our spouse, best friend and soul mate, leaving us devastated and alone. Now we are left with no other option but to re-write the ending of our fairy tale life. As we struggle to draft a conclusion to the saga, we worry.……can we still hear their voice?........can we still remember that special scent?..…..can we still picture them smiling? Our years spent together resemble a tapestry, rich and complex, woven with threads of past joys, struggles, triumphs, wonder, disappointment, delights, sorrow, and bliss……. countless memories. In our struggle to compose the new ending of our being, we need to remember that our lost loved ones will always be woven into the tapestry that makes up our life story. While some threads may grow “bare” with time, and the shades of our memories grow less colorful, it is always the well-worn threads that we love the most and give us the most comfort. We will need to add new threads to this tapestry, not to replace the old ones, but to strengthen them. So, as you compose a new ending to the fairy tale and re-weave the tapestry of your life, you should keep in mind that there are friends who are willing to muddle through it with you and laughter to help you forget for a little while. If you have spent too much time looking for another happy ending and can’t seem to find one, maybe it’s time you start looking for a new beginning instead. Remember, there is no quick route through life’s crummy stuff. It takes however long it wants to take.
