TARĀWĪH is a plural form of the gerund TARWĪH which literally means to make relax. This word is used to refer to the long prayers offered by the faithful during Ramadhān. It is named as such because our Righteous Predecessors, after the days fasting, find solace and ease by listening to the recitation of the Qurān in their Salāt. Hence, we find most of them reading the longest Surahs in only a several units of prayer. Unfortunately, in contrary to how our predecessors see it, we now consider such prayers as rituals that are physically challenging to perform. This is because we have neglected to break a significant leg towards understanding the verses of the Qurān. As a result, we are only able to appreciate the melodious tone of the Imams recitation while oblivious of the underlying instructions and wisdom behind the verses that are read. Thus, we hardly find the comfort that those who came before us once felt. May Allāh grant us all sincerity and patience in performing that which would please Him. Aameen...
