TBT -- Almost a decade ago exactly I entered my first (and what I thought would be my only) singing competition -- Showtime at the Apollo. It was my chance to stand on that world famous stage and I took it. I was super nervous because the two singers right before me got booed off the stage and swept away by the Sandman (their tap dancing clown).....really didnt want that to happen to me. I stepped out onto the stage and rubbed the lucky tree stump thats been there for decades and as I started walking towards the piano I heard boos coming from the audience. Hadnt even played a note yet! Maybe they didnt like my outfit -- which was pretty whack, actually. Anyway, I cut into the opening descending riff of Donny Hathaways version of A Song For You and the crowd hushed pretty quick. I started singing the first few lines and the crowd went crazy. Was a pretty good feeling. Ended up standing in the winners circle that night. Was a pretty special night for me. Only a few close friends in the audience to share it with me. This August 19th will be a little bit different. Hope the results the same. Fingers crossed.
