#TBT Moment: I started off on a stage at the Air Lounge 2.5 years ago. The first time I did a poem at the mic, I was reading from the book. After breaking my open mic virginity, I was so excited that I looked forward to getting on the mic. I wrote Im A Survivor in February 2012 after watching various spoken word artists at this open mic. I memorized it for my first poetry feature in July 2012. Every week I spent $5 to get in open mic, which was my rehearsal and learning spot. 2.5 years of going to open mics and performing prepared me for Oaklands Got Talent. Who knew a $20 investment would gain me exposure and $500? I didnt. Well, I kind of did but I never want to think Im the best. I kept practicing and practicing. Yesterday, I didnt get a chance to interact with the other performers. I stayed alone and practiced. Well, it paid off. I trained myself to stay ready and focused. Nothing can and will get in my way. Theres no going back and Im ready for the next opportunity to come my way.
