TBT The first member of my Williams family to live in Charlotte was my 2X great Grandfather, Joseph Augustus Williams. He was born in New Bern on June 25, 1819. He married Ann Maria Penny of Southampton, New York on March 6, 1848. He operated a mercantile store and a bakery in New Bern. His Brother published the New Bern paper. He fled the Federal troops of Gen. Burnsides army and brought his family to Charlotte in 1862. He died on December 16, 1875 and is buried in Elmwood Cemetery. Heres a picture of my Grandfather and of the house the family lived in in New Bern.
