TBU TRIBUTE TO LINDA McCartney By TBU Editor Robbie Thornton. I was going to write a tribute to Linda, but then I thought, who better to talk about her than the man who was her fellow band mate, best friend, husband, confidante, lover and soul mate; Paul himself. Heres an excerpt from an article in The Sunday Times Magazine: Ten years after Lindas death, Paul told how he managed to woo photographer Linda, who died aged 56, Paul said: As she was leaving… I saw an obvious opportunity. I said: My name’s Paul. Whats yours? I think she probably recognised me. It was so corny, but I told the kids later that, had it not been for that moment, none of them would be here. Sir Paul went on to reveal how Lindas down to earth manner had helped him cope with his Beatles fame and live a normal life. He wrote: Linda was very down to earth. She taught me to relax. Her priorities were private rather than public. She didnt go on television to ingratiate herself. She was just very funny, very smart and very talented. In 2006, Paul also spoke to Diane Sawyer on ABC NEWS, saying, After Linda died, I think all of us in the family would hear noises, or see things, and would say, Thats Linda, thats mom, and a lot of things happened like that... and I think in some ways its very comforting to think shes still here. Youd like to think that, and you do. Serendipitous events convinced McCartney that his wife was still around him. Paul: Its the magic of little things. One day, as he worked in an edit room, a fragment of a recorded. The soundman hit the button and Lindas voice just said, Im in heaven. Paul: So its that kind a thing. Its the beautiful moments, inspirational moments, you know Paul says there have been many moments since her death in which he has felt his late wifes spirit. In the end of his poem HER SPIRIT he mentions a rare meeting with a white squirrel. I was on a horse ride. I was on my own now, because Linda taught me to ride and she was a great rider. And one day, after she died, I saw this white squirrel in the woods. I mean, this one was looking right at me, didnt move. My mind just went, Thats probably Linda. Somehow her spirits got into that ...and I think its very comforting. I dont know if thats true, but it sure is a great thought. HER SPIRIT by Paul McCartney: Her spirit moves wind chimes When air is still And fills the rooms With fragrance of lily Her eyes blue green Still seen Perfectly happy With nothing Her spirit sets The water pipes a humming Fat lektronic force be with ya sound Her spirit talks to me Through animals Beautiful creature Lay with me Bird that calls my name Insists that she is here And nothing Left to fear Bright white squirrel Foot of tree Fixes me With innocent gaze Her spirit talks to me Consolation: Sawyer asked McCartney if writing poems console him and Paul answered, They let you know what youre thinking. They let you put down what youre thinking. Thats why I enjoy that. You know, its, its a simple act. Its like writing a letter to yourself. In 1995, Linda found a lump under her arm, and began a round of chemotherapy to combat her disease. As her health worsened, McCartney and his wife spent cherished moments together. I would go out for a run, think of some words, get home from the run, write them down, and make a cup a tea for Linda, said McCartney, who would bring it to her for breakfast. Id make a little tray, and go up, and then Id say, Hey, by the way, do you want to hear some poetry? Shed always … shed say, Yeah. And so I wrote that poem. BLESSED by Paul McCartney I would come back from a run With lines of poetry to tell And having listened, she would say What a mind. Shed fold my words inside her head And though the lines may not have been supreme, she wasnt merely being kind She meant it, what she said And I am blessed for she said, What a mind. Its going to make a make a guy feel good, that kind a thing, he said. Linda was a beautiful woman. Pauls Golden Earth Girl knew how to make him feel loved, cherished and special. What more could a man want?
