TEACHER IN-SERVICE January 17, 2015 Beck Cultural Exchange Center, 1927 Dandridge Ave 8:30-9:00 a.m. Registration/Breakfast 9:00- 2:00 The purpose of the MLK Teacher In-Service program is to provide a very special training session for teachers and other professionals that tie in directly with the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The theme for the 2015 program is “Remembering the Past, While Standing in the Future.” Teachers and professionals attending this program will deal with strategies educators can use for facing a diverse student body. In this 5 hour introductory workshop, Dr. Coleman- King’s presentation will address the following issues: • Cultural awareness and sensitivity, • Disparities in suspension rates and disciplinary referrals, and • Culturally relevant classroom management practices. This professional development series equips schools and stakeholders with tools to examine the challenges working in diverse schools and communities from a lens of racial and cultural difference. This is an introductory workshop to a series of trainings that support educators in recognizing and addressing issues related to difference that affect students’ ability to learn in an environment they perceive as supportive and encouraging.
