TECH TIP: In drag racing, the mounting location of your rear shocks can play an important role in your car’s performance. Some racers mount their rear shocks in stock locations, some behind the axle and some even mount them at an angle. On vehicles set up for hard core drag racing, shocks and springs generally work best if they’re located behind the axle and in a straight up and down position. Shocks mounted behind the axle allow for quicker access for tuning adjustments, provide the most travel and allow ample room for larger tires. Racers also won’t have to worry about excessive side load on shocks or running them at a higher rate if they’re mounted straight up and down. It’s also a good idea to have your shocks spread out as wide as possible for stability, while still allowing enough room for tire clearance.
