***TERROR IN BENGAL*** What started out as a peaceful protest by students demanding fair investigations into a molestation charge has snow-balled into police violence and brutality , thus exposing the high-handedness and incapability of the authorities in charge. The students of Jadavpur University (JU), West Bengal put forth their legitimate demands asking for an independent investigation into the case of a 2nd year female student being molested by a group of people from the hostel inside campus premises on the 28th of August. The Internal Complaints Committee ( ICC ) formed in response is alleged to have been biased and to have disregarded Vishakha Guidelines. The victim is said to have been subjected to further harassment from the authorities such as unannounced visits to her house and victim-blaming. 10th September: - Students took a decision having completely lost trust in ICC to start a Peaceful Non-Violent Movement 16th September : - After continuous 150 hours of sit-down protest , “Gherao” started and continued for 7 hours. However this lead to the Vice Chancellor calling in the police to deal with the protests of students, stating that he felt he could be murdered . The result was high handed actions of police along with suspected TMC goons where guys were injured, girls were man handled and molested. 37 arrested (including a girl), 40 injured and hospitalized. Power was cut off. State of total anarchy was caused there as law enforcement agencies went on rampage.Students allege that the Jadavpur University girls were dragged by the hair and groped, and male students were kicked and punched in a barbaric, dead-of-the-night police assault to break up a peaceful gherao of the vice-chancellor on Wednesday. Girls say the cops — most of whom were in plainclothes — deliberately hit them on the breasts and trampled on the boys chests and necks with boots during 10 minutes of terror. One of the girls, allegedly was molested, taken to the Lalbazar police HQ, then to a hospital, and detained at Jadavpur police station before being released without being allowed to file an FIR. Two of the injured students are in ICU. Cell-phone videos of the attack, filmed by students, have since gone viral. The situation has not improved. TLI hopes situation returns to normal soon where students can get along with their studies ASAP. Further, the police personnel who had misbehaved are brought to justice and most importantly the original students demand for fair investigation into the molestation case be accepted. The Chief Minister should intervene to calm things down as well as improve her dismal record on dissent going by the past events in Bengal.
