TERRORISM: FG RATIFIES BILATERAL AGREEMENTS WITH NIGER, UK. The Federal Government has ratified the implementation of the Defence Cooperation Bilateral Agreement between the country, Niger Republic and the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Bilateral military cooperation between Nigeria and the United Kingdom (UK). The agreements were ratified at yesterday’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting chaired by President Goodluck Jonathan in order to enhance the ongoing war against terrorism. Briefing State House correspondents after the meeting Information Minister Labaran Maku said the ratification followed a memorandum brought by the Minister of State for Defence, Erelu Olusola Obada. He said the Defence agreement between Nigeria and Niger Republic was aimed at providing mutual military support, security of the common borders, intervention and military assistance, exchange of intelligence on internal and external security, joint military exercise and operations. Maku also explained that the memorandum between Nigeria and the United Kingdom was aimed at establishing a bilateral military cooperation within the framework of competent authorities as defined in the national legislation and building an enduring defence relationship that contributes to the security of each participant and enhances peace and security across the West African sub-region based on equality and mutual respect. He added that on the memorandum with the United Kingdom it will enhance mutual relations between the armed forces of the two countries which will contribute to the strengthening of international peace and security.
