As an Oamaruvian, thanks to the people who made the effort today to welcome the thousand and more people involved in the Targa South Rally. It was much appreciated, especially the Victorian Ambassadors, the Steampunk people, Oliver on his Penny Farthing who pedalled like mad and Rod Tempero who brought along his latest creation — a Ferrari GTO. And, of course, to the locals who came down for a look. While the visitors were busy either fixing cars or feeding the inner soul, those I spoke to were full of wonder at what they had seen and experienced in both North Otago and Oamaru. We had no idea. . . . was what one Aucklander told me as he tucked into a cheese roll for Sue in the Kombi.The countryside is sublime and who knows about this group of old buildings, its like a time warp. And Sally Ann and the staff at the Loan & Merc put on a lunch that was clearly the best theyd had in the three days on the road and in the most unique surroundings. And, as a lifelong motorsport enthusiast, thanks to the people in rural Waitaki who were either locked in, or locked out of their homes over the past two days through road closures. Today was a particularly big day for Oamaru and although those taking part in Targa didnt get an opportunity to see much beyond the parking area and the Loan & Merc, we did make an impression.
