THANKSGIVING ON THE POOL TABLE….My Dad thought it would be fun for his three boys to have a pool table to play on with their friends so he bought one for them for Christmas. We had a two story house with a big room at the back of the second floor where two of us shared a bedroom. The pool table was supposed to go there. On Christmas morning, we came downstairs and found the pool table where my Mom’s pretty dining room set had been. My Dad had moved the dining room set to the garage for the morning until we played on the table and then moved it upstairs. Later that day, we started to move the table upstairs after collapsing the legs. But no matter how hard we tried, we couldn’t get it around the bend at the top of the enclosed stairwell. Mom graciously said it could stay in the dining room and I guess they sold the dining room set. Not only was the pool table constantly used by the family and our friends but the underside became storage for our skis and surfboards. Also, the room wasn’t quite big enough so when we took the pool stick back before hitting a shot, we would often ram it back into the wall creating wonderful round indentations about an inch in diameter. Year later when they sold the pool table and got another nice dining room set, a painter would ask her what all these little round circles were and she smiled and told him what they were. So Mom loved to entertain and have friends and family over for all the major holidays. What to do? She just had my Dad cut a piece of plywood identical to the top of the pool table and put it over the table. She covered it with a nice table cloth, put out her fine china and silverware and the table could seat 12 which was great for our gatherings. You did, however, have to be careful not to stub your toes on the surfboards and skis hidden below!
