THAT LUCKY OLD SUN I had a Jimmie Rodgers album that I used to listen to during the long year I traveled as a relief worker, covering three states and hundreds of statute miles each week, waking up in motel rooms unsure of which state I was in, but usually just the State of Bewilderment. Funny, but I put this song in the background during all that travail, not admitting to myself how much it was the perfect anthem of those times, and also these times. It was planted like a seed in my mind, and has been steadily growing. I keep coming back to it, like the North Star. I realized, only in recent years, that it might be one of my favorite songs of a lifetime---among the top five, and I dont even know which songs would make up the other four. It seems like a song that no one wrote. Its the exhalation of all workers. It fell on fertile ground, and just grew.
