THE 121st EDITION OF THE fd ZONE (Part V) Dear friends, THE fd ZONE is delighted to host Farida Pachas feature documentary My Name is Salt. This film is a stunningly poised portrait of a season’s salt-panning in the Little Rann of Kutch in Gujarat. Crisply sculpted out of found elements – the epic flat landscapes, iridescent light, formations of salt rakers and mounds, abandoned vehicles, very occasional dialogue and diegetic music, the film is a meditative, immersive picture of labour as an act of faith, made with striking flair and beauty. (Text abstracted from a review in Sight and Sound, February 2014 issue). The film has been widely screened, much acclaimed and awarded at major international film festivals including IDFA, Hong Kong International Film Festival and Documenta Madrid. The films director and producer, Farida Pacha and conematographer and co-producer Lutz Connerman was present at the screening. MY NAME IS SALT 2013, Switzerland/India, 92 min, Colour, HD video, Gujarati (with English subtitles) Written and directed by Farida Pacha Cinematography: Lutz Konermann Editing: Katharina Fiedler Location sound: Sanjeev Gupta, Ramesh Birajdar Sound editing and mix: Florian Eidenbenz Music: Marcel Vaid Producers: Lutz Konermann, Farida Pacha for Leafbird Films The desert extends endlessly – flat, grey, relentless. There is not a tree or blade of grass or rock. But there is one thing in abundance: salt. Salt is everywhere, lying just beneath the cracked, baked surface of the earth. This is the Little Rann of Kutch, 5000 sq kms of saline desert in India. And for eight months of the year, Chhanabhai and his family live here without water, electricity or provisions – tirelessly extracting salt from this desolate landscape. Under the blinding glare of the sun, they work on the salt fields until large crystals have formed. Their labour is rhythmic, a dance that mirrors the dance of the mirages on the burning horizon. After months of hard work, the salt is ready to be harvested - just before the heavy monsoon rains will come to once again wash their salt fields away.
