THE BEAUTIFUL GAME ! A few days ago we were discussing the World Cup Soccer games, and a friends comments suggested that she thinks of top-level basketball in terms of the one-on-one style of the 1990s and early 2000s. This years NBA playoffs finally came down to a contest between one-on-one basketball, personified by the Miami Heat, and team-ball, played most beatutifully by the San Antonio Spurs. The Team style won. A professional video company -- whose principal, Colin Stanton, is an avid Spurs fan -- put together a short tribute to these Spurs, a beautifully produced beautiful video named The Beautiful Game. It doesnt matter if youre a roundball fan or a ballet aficianodo: the motion and coordination and incredible interplay of the Spurs players is just gorgeous to watch. Several of these guys have been playing together for thirteen years -- same team, same coach, same game -- and it truly shows in their ability to sense what is going on with each of their teammates, amidst the incredibly fast pace of todays NBA.
