THE BIG BANG THEORY: I love this video. I was 18 years old, a freshman at the University of Colorado, Boulder. My major was aerospace engineering. They have a program in that major in the College of Engineering and Applied Science that links aerospace to bioengineering. What many people dont know about technology such as prosthetic technology, medical implants, and gadgetry that is inserted inside biological tissues is that it is developed from the field I started out in – aerospace. In my very first semester as a freshman, I sat under the instruction of Igor Gamow, who is the son of physicist George Gamow. G. Gamow is famous for his pioneering work in developing the Big Bang Theory. His son, Igor, was a microbiologist professor at the University of Colorado and an inventor. The course I took under Igor was biochemical engineering for non-biochemical engineering majors. It was a 210 level class, meaning that its a sophomore level class. (100s are freshman, 300s junior, 400s senior, 500s first year graduate school, and so on). I will never forget the first day of class. The lecture halls there seat about 200, and the classroom was packed. Igor used the first lecture session to go through the math of his fathers work, and essentially refute everything his father ever did. It had nothing to do with the course, but that was Igor. He had his own style. What I learned that day about the Big Bang, the intricacy of the calcs, and how each tiny fraction of a second has its own story behind it stuck with me the rest of my life. So, when I watched this video, all the excitement that comes along with the theory is so reminiscent of what it was for me that day in that lecture hall in August 1980. Theres more to this story. Its a current news story one more time, scientificamerican/article/early-universe-explorer-looks-for-answers/.
