THE “BLESSING BAG! A marvelous idea! The Henrietta Isom Missionary Society at Wolridge Chapel A. M. E. Church, Houston, TX, where Rev. Thelma L. Maxwell is pastor, demonstrates their concerned for men, women and families in our community who do not enjoy basic life-sustaining resources. In order to address this concern, they invented the “Blessing Bag.” The “Blessing Bag” is an assortment of wrapped snack foods, cheese crackers, processed non-perishable foods and bottled water packaged in a self-sealed medium plastic bag. Members who usually see a homeless person on a daily basis include fresh fruit. Individually-wrapped plastic table ware is included when necessary, based upon the contents. Members of the congregation donate the items for the bags. The Missionary ladies package the bags and issue them to members on request. Care is taken to ensure that the product expiration date is consistent with the approximate date of distribution of the bags. Widespread implementation of this idea can address the temporary needs of thousands of men, women and families who stand at busy intersections in anticipation of a response by a passerby. There is merit in considering the possibility of promoting this and similar ideas as denomination-wide outreach ministries. I am reminded of what Jesus said in Matthew 25:31- 46: “… Inasmuch as you did it unto the least of these, you did it unto me.” When you are in Houston, visit Wolridge Chapel AME Church.
