THE BLINDSPOT A “blindspot” is literally an obscuration in perception; when applied to human behavior, it is an unconscious self-destructive pattern that creates dysfunction. The System is littered with blindspots, but we’re unable to perceive them because they’ve been there for so long that they bypass our awareness. If we are to be the change we wish to see in the world, we must first become aware of what we’re not seeing. For example: We look to leaders to solve our problems, and when they can’t, we elect someone else, yet the real problem is the structure of The System. Special interest politics and majority rule inherently lead to polarity and “shame and blame.” No matter who we elect, competition renders true solutions impossible, and ordinary citizens are left feeling powerless. This creates an epidemic of avoidance and apathy, in which problems are ignored until they turn into catastrophes, and eventually, as history has proven - collapse. In order to change The System, we must first change the culture. This is where blindspots come in; understanding the limitations – both real and perceived – of our current decision-making models, as well as our own ingrained beliefs and biases, is essential. Until we are aware of the rut, we will keep spinning our wheels. Next, we must include all the stakeholders. Many complex problems cannot be solved without working directly with people whom we can’t understand, we think are inhuman, or we literally hate. The situation is too complex – it has too many players, too many interdependencies, and too much unpredictability to be changed by one individual or organization, even one with an abundance of resources and authority. THE BLINDSPOT will feature a new approach to problem-solving that viewers can employ within their own communities, as well as on national and global levels. This will take the form of a narrative we track throughout the film, in which a disparate group of citizens comes together to engage their “collective intelligence” and generate innovative solutions to a problem plaguing the city. We will follow their progress – both their trials and tribulations – as they work with each other and the city to recognize their blindspots, find common ground, and create/implement a plan for sustainable change. As well as making the film, we will be creating a social network around our core concepts – a collective intelligence network providing the public with tools to take action and opportunities to connect with others who share our vision. THE BLINDSPOT is a 90-minute documentary that exposes the untapped power of “collective intelligence” for meeting the challenges of our future adequately. We can be the change we wish to see in the world. But that’s only half the picture. Before action comes awareness; we can’t change what we can’t see.
