He studied Bharata Natyam with Padma Shri Adyar K.Lakshman, Cunningham technique in New York and classical ballet with Marian St. Claire and Michael Beare. He has worked in collaboration with Wayne McGregor, Akram Khan and others. Khoo’s company mavinkhooDance was founded in 2003. His commissions include the Royal Opera House (ROH2), Canada Dance Festival, Venice Biennale and more. As a practice-based researcher, his main area of exploration examines notions of androgyny in performance within the frameworks of classicism and philosophy. WORKSHOP /// THE BODY BEYOND In this workshop we will be exploring the physical possibilities of the body in relation to space, rhythm, stillness and text. Participants will engage in a warm up session that aims to push their individual physical potentials, the idea being that exhaustion can free the limitations of control – thus ‘re-negotiating’ the perception of control/ego. An improvisational warm up will also be led whereby imagery will be used to articulate the micro and macro points of the body. This will develop from solo, to duet and ensemble collaboration. The deconstruction of gender is emphasised so as to ‘free’ the physical limitations of stereotyped gendered possibilities. We’ll explore the spatial and emotional relationship between performers as well as improvisational techniques that can be used to structure body composition. Finally, the use of text as image codes to develop material will be employed to initiate bodily dialogues. Text will be developed through the workshop so there is no preparation required. Participants are advised to wear suitable attire (i.e. sweat pants, T-shirt) and to bring along a towel and water. There is no dance experience required to take this workshop.
