THE BRAIN NEEDS CHOLESTEROL TO THRIVE! Cholesterol is a critical brain nutrient essential for the function of neurons and it plays a fundamental role in the cell membrane. It acts as an antioxidant and a precursor to important brain-supporting substances like vitamin D, as well as the steroid-related hormones (e.g., hormones such as estrogen and testosterone). Cholesterol is an essential fuel for neurons. Neurons are unable to generate cholesterol; instead, they rely on delivery of cholesterol from the bloodstream via a specific carrier vehicle called LDL. Unfortunately, this carrier vehicle has been given the derogatory title of bad cholesterol. In reality, LDL (low density lipoprotein) is neither good nor bad. It is just a vehicle to transport cholesterol in the bloodstream to where it is needed. The scientific literature has proven that when cholesterol levels are low, the brain simply doesnt work well; individuals with low cholesterol are at a risk for dementia and other neurological problems. CHOLESTEROL IS TRULY OUR FRIEND! The enemy is OXIDIZED cholesterol which can be produced from improper cooking and from uncontrolled inflammation within the body.
