THE CIRCUM BAIKAL RAILWAY - the unique monument of engineering architecture. This section of 84 km was the hardest on the entire Transsibirean Railway (from Kultuk to Baikal stations). This rout section numbers 39 tunnels, a lot of bridges, viaducts and stone galleries. This track section is really “a golden buckle on the steel belt of Russia”. One diesel locomotive with several cars runs back and forth (from Slyudyanka to Port Baikal). The local people call it “yo-yo back and forth” (motanya) or “transfer”. Its main function is to provide the citizens of the roadside settlements with all necessary articles.
